Remarks made by Meru Senator Mithika Linturi in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County today have caused mixed reactions from across the political divide.
Linturi was captured on camera, asking the people of Eldoret to kick out “madoadoa” who do not support DP William Ruto.
The Senator said in part, “Nawaomba kwamba madoadoa mliyo nayo hapa muweze kuondoa. Translation [I urge you to do away with ‘madoadoa’ in your midst].”
According to the experts, ‘madoadoa’ is a very sensitive term in Kenyan politics.
REASON, It brings to life the memories of the past pre and post-election ethnic violence where certain communities were attacked for not supporting a candidate from the larger host community.
For the international community, ‘madoadoa’ means spots.
Sources close to Linturi revealed to semakenya.com that the senator tried to clear the air through a phone call conversation with The Standard on the phone to clear the air.
Linturi explained, “I am just saying if we are supporting DP Ruto from the Mt Kenya region, specifically Meru, then other MPs Kutuny, Kamar, and Mishra should not be re-elected.”
Several politicians have since condemned Senator Linturi’s remarks, terming them unfortunate.
Moses Kuria Wrote, “I am a close friend of the Deputy President. However I am far. If you are in Eldoret and near hear tell him to rebuke this talk. It doesn’t matter whether it is said by a Linturi or an Oscar Sudi. It matters that it is being said in Eldoret Sports Club, few kilometres from KAG Church Kiambaa in ‘Burnt’ Forest’. Jameni Madoadoa tena.”
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui tweeted, “Utterances attributed to Senator Mithika Linturi in Eldoret are a serious assault to the peace and harmony to communities in Rift Valley. To profile persons on the basis of political or ethnic orientation is regrettable.”
The DPP has taken over the matter and ordered comprehensive investigations on the subject.
“The DPP has directed that comprehensive investigations be undertaken expeditiously on utterances made by Hon. Mithika Linturi. We wish to inform members of public that persons found culpable of hate speech and incitement will be prosecuted,” DPP’s Office.
