The Road, previously named “DigDig road”, was renamed after Central Organization of Trade Union (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli. The name change was unveiled on Thursday 27th, 2021 by Nairobi Deputy Governor Ann Kananu.
KEY POINTS:
- Atwoli, who just got re-elected, took over the leadership of COTU from the Late Joseph Mugalla, and he will serve for another five years until 2026.
- Atwoli highly appreciated the move; he said, “I want to thank the leadership of Nairobi County for this great honour and recognition of services to the government of the day, the community, and workers at large.”
- His new home in Kajiado has hosted prominent leaders and politicians in Kenyan, including the Former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Oginga.
According to Deputy Governor Ann Kananu Mwenda, this move was to honor COTU’s Francis Atwoli for his role in ensuring that the employee’s needs and rights are protected.
Francis Atwoli has served at the helm of the Trade Union for over 20 years; he was first elected to the position in 2001.
