“I was validly elected by the people of Nairobi,” Sonko hits back at Uhuru claiming he was telling lies about helping him clinch the top seat and become the second governor of the capital Nairobi.
Even before his impeachment, there was already some tension between the president and the former governor of Nairobi County.
Talking during an interview with Kikuyu radio stations on Monday, Mr. Kenyatta said he had helped the former governor to become the county boss but he ended up being “up and about doing nothing”.https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/politics/article/2001400486/uhuru-i-do-not-remember-telling-you-to-vote-for-any-particular-persons?fbclid=IwAR0mrUuTARaox-Q10x-hAqvhOd32TsIEQ-Lr0HTnvLbstq0gZrBve6Le29g
Inooro, Kameme and Gukena are the local station which aired the interview on Monday.
How Did The Former Nairobi County boss Mr. Mike Sonko find himself out of office before the end of his term?
Sonko’s leadership style almost grounded the services in the capital, and so I had to initiate his removal, Mr. Uhuru claimed.
To help sought out the mess, Uhuru through consultations created The Nairobi Metropolitan Service and appointed major general Badi as director general.
Some key functions of Nairobi County were then transferred to The Nairobi Metropolitan Service;
- County Health services
- County Transport services
- County Public Works, Utilities, and Ancillary services
- County Government Planning and Development
The signing of this deal took place at State House in the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Nairobi governor, Mike Sonko, Devolution CS, Eugene Wamalwa. the Speaker of the Senate, Hon. Kenneth Lusaka and the Attorney General, Paul Kihara.
Sonko who seemed to like the idea later made a U-turn, alleging that the appointment of general Badi was an illegality.
At this point things started to change.
Sonko today, “it is not Uhuru Kenyatta who made me the Governor of Nairobi. I was validly elected by close to one million residents of Nairobi,”
But Uhuru thinks otherwise.
