Michael Joseph: The Safaricom’s PLC Board Chair.

Many Kenyans are familiar with the name Michael Joseph. As a matter of fact, some of us grew up thinking that he was the owner of Safaricom PLC.

Well, for those who may want to know. Michael Joseph is a South African national who first came to the limelight when he was appointed the first CEO of Safaricom in 2000.

He served as the CEO of Safaricom from July 2000 to 2010, before the late Bob Collymore took over as the Company’s second CEO.

Before Joseph joined Safaricom, he was Director of Mobile Money at Vodafone Group Services Limited.

He was at the helm of Safaricom for ten years. During his successful tenure as the CEO of Safaricom, he steered Safaricom PLC from 16000 thousand subscribers to over 16 million subscribers.

I believe we will all agree that Michael Joseph has built a successful career at Safaricom PLC over the years.

On the 6th March 2007, he was at the helm, and he oversaw the launch of M-Pesa, a mobile money transfer platform.

The late Bob Collymore then replaced Michael Joseph as CEO of Safaricom in 2010.

Bob steered the Company to even greater success from November 2010 to when he passed on in July 2019.

Michael Joseph was re-appointed to the post of an interim CEO in July following the demise of Bob Collymore and pending the appointment of the new CEO.

Peter Ndegwa replaced Michael Joseph as the new Safaricom CEO on 1st April 2020.

Michael Joseph, the Kenya Airways Chairman, became the chairperson of Safaricom PLC effective 1st August 2020.

He took over NicholasNg’ang’ a, who will be completing his term by the end of July 2010.

Michael Joseph has also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Maseno University.
